Until modern times，those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite(精英) and the servants，laborers and professionals who served them.Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.
我的语法特别烂。。。。尤其后面那个句子。我每一段都基本可以看懂，但连在一起就看不懂。。。求教英语大神们，怎么学复合句，以及复合句里的语法点。非常感谢！
