My favourite festival
My favourite festival is the Spring Festival. Why? Because I have lots of fun at the Spring Festival.
The Spring Festival is a popular holiday in our country. It is in January or February. Our family get together. We have a big dinner at my grandparents’ home. I always eat a lot of delicious food. My cousin and me both get red packets from our grandparents. My parents usually go shopping with me. We buy some nice clothes for ourselves. We often watch TV at home and sometimes read books or surf the Internet. Sometimes, we greet other people on the phone.
I’m always happy at the Spring Festival. Which is your favourite festival?

My Mid-Winter Holiday

An old friend from University whom I had traveled with 40 years ago came from the US, from Minnesota, to travel with me over this holiday. She had visited China 10 years ago for 6 weeks and taken an art class in Hangzhou. So we traveled to places in Yunnan province where she had NOT traveled then so she could see some new sites.

Our trip begin in Nanjing where we visited the lake, the city wall – the longest – 30 km. – city wall in the world, the Nanjing Massacre museum and some other sites. We then flew to Chengdu on our way to Lijiang in Yunnan province. Our plane was making the one hour flight into a mountain valley to land in Lijiang, when the pilot suddenly had to pull up, as their were strong winds and he couldn’t stabilize the plane to land! We had to fly all the way back to Chengdu, deplane for 2 hours, and then fly back at night where we landed successfully! It was very nerve-wracking for me and I didn’t want to get on a plane again any time soon!

Lijiang is quite high, at the foothills of the Himalayas and not too far from the Tibetan border. So I noticed the lower oxygen content in the air and more huffing and puffing on my part just walking around but especially on stairs! I had a slight headache for the first couple of days, all symptoms of altitude sickness, which was just mild in my case. I have climbed a volcano in Hawaii before and experienced altitude sickness where I could not stand up, felt nauseous, had an extreme headache and the only remedy was to quickly get down to a lower altitude, which I did. I went from 14,000+ feet down to 9,000 feet and then I felt fine. This concerns me a little as I hope to travel to Tibet in May, which is quite high.

Old Lijiang is a lovely walled city, with large cobbled stones streets, no cars allowed,so it was really nice to walk around. Many canals branched off of the Li river are routed through the town, with picturesque bridges arching over them. This town with most of its buildings were destroyed during an earthquake in the late 1990s. The United Nations identified this town as an historic site and spent millions helping to rebuild the tradition Naxi courtyard homes and buildings. So it’s relatively new buildings were rebuilt in the old style, two stories with a courtyard. We stayed in one of these. The only problem: no heat! One of my fellow teachers is from Texas and doesn’t do well in the cold. The guest house supplied heating blankets under the sheets so we would turn on the blankets, stuff our clothes in the bed to warm them up before getting dressed quickly in the cold. We Americans are pretty soft when it comes to heat! The days were beautiful and sunny, though, as we walked around the town surrounded by mountains with snow caps.

We had Li, a Naxi guide, who drove us out to a market a couple of hours out in the country. Many of China’s ethnic minorities would bring their produce to sell here. We were the only foreigners in sight and caused quite a stir, especially among the local children who followed us around. They especially loved to see their picture on my digital camera. One of the little girls, about 10 I think, avoided my camera whenever I tried to take her picture. She finally relented at the very end and I got a couple of shots of her.

We drove out to Tiger Leaping Gorge, a narrow place where the Yangzte river roars through a mountain pass, cutting this deep gorge. We drove on a road that had just reopened after being repaired from a landslide. It made me very nervous to be on. I was sure there was a rock above with my name on it! So I finally made the group turn around when I got out of the car and walked back down to the entrance. On the other side of the gorge, someone was blasting with dynamite for some reason and I was sure it would cause another slide! On the way back we stopped at an overlook where we could see the “First Bend of the River”, where the Yangzte turns and heads north for a bit after it comes down from the Tibetan plateau.
We spent one evening at a wonderful song and dance show where many of theYi and other minorities displayed their traditional dances. It was very colorful.
Then we moved on south into Yunnan.

My favourite food
I don't remember how many people ask me such question "what's your hobby?” "I like travelling ." Today i want to change my answer, my hobby is eating. I'm not particular about food, if you ask me my favourite food , i will choose chafing dish( A metal dish or pan mounted above a heating device and used to cook food or keep it warm at the table)beyond all doubts. Eating chafing dish is our first choice for our party and we ate it the day before yesterday, it's raining all day and a little cold , but we forgot nothing when we were eating. It's delicious !
What's your favourite food? Can you tell me ?

My favourite sport
My favourite sport is basketball as it is very exciting. I like basketball because the N.B.A. stars play very well. Basketball is very cheap and it is a good sport for our health. We can grow taller if we play basketball often. Also it keeps me fit.
I play basketball three times a week. Most often I play it in my school. I often play it with my friends although I may play it myself. I feel very happy when I play basketball in school with my classmates. Sometimes I play basketball in the playground near my home.
Basketball is very easy to play. If you play basketball very well, you can form a basketball team to take part in the competition. If you win the basketball competition, you will have the prize. You may become a famous basketball star.
Therefore, basketball is a very good sport. I think, you can play basketball, can’t you?

我最喜爱的电影—慈母泪(My Favourite Movie--I Remember Mama)
I Remember Mama is my favourite American movie. Education has been a primary concern in many traditional families. In I Remember Mama, Martha and her husband Lars show high respect for education. Especially Martha, she plays an influential role within her family. She tells her children that knowledge is priceless.
They invite Mr. Hyde to read them books in the evening. Although Mr. Hyde has left them a collection of his books without getting paid a couple months of rents, Martha does not get angry with him. Instead, she tells her children that the value of all of his books have greatly exceeded the total amount of his unpaid rents. Nevertheless, Martha and Lars always encourage and support their children to keep on pursing their educational goals.
It is very important for children to understand their family values. The concept of family values is rooted in every culture, thus making the values distinguishable for different societies. In addition, cultures change from time to time in response to economical and cultural developments.
Therefore, family values vary from household to household, and from generation to generation. In I Remember Mama, the role of the parents, aunts and uncle, siblings are consistent. Martha’s daughter Katherine asks, “Mama, did you come to America to be rich?” Martha answers, “Oh, no, I came to be close to my family.” In their conversation, Katherine has learnt from her mother that family value is more than everything in their family.
Last and not least, I Remember Mama is a delight to watch from beginning to end. In I Remember Mama, I have learned the importance of education. I have also learnt that cultural and family values are equally significant for the upbringing of children. I strongly recommend this movie to all of you!
