I am a graduate of Oxford (’73)& met my wife at Emory when we were seniors (’75).Two of our children have attended Oxford (’03 and ‘07) and both continued at Emory (’05 and ‘09).Both came to love the place as much as me.Oxford admits a broader range of students that Emory College. However,Oxford students do measurably better in their Junior & Senior years at Emory than a large percentage of Emory College students who begin there. We think this is because of the advantages of smaller classes and intense interest of the Oxford faculty in the individual students during these critical first two years.Because there are only Freshmen and Sophomores at Oxford, the opportunities for leadership roles are extensive.
Oxford is particularly a good place to start if you intent to go to grad school. The faculty is particularly focused on helping students not only while they attend Oxford but as they continue at Emory.(A substantial number of Emory faculty children take advantage of Emory’s faculty discounts by attending Oxford.) Most Oxford students intend to continue to grad school. In this year’s First Year Class at Emory Medical School, there are 15 students who graduated from Emory College.Of those 15 students,5 began their Emory career at Oxford.Although there is certainly no correlation, the value of Oxford’s Biology and Chemistry faculty is well recognized at Emory.
Oxford’s campus is where Emory University began and the “feel” of the history of the University is present the moment you walk through the campus.(A side note,Georgia Tech actually began on the Oxford campus – another long story.)
Assuming an applicant can be admitted at either Emory College or at Oxford, the key question for the prospective student will be whether you want a large,metro-located campus or a small, intimate place to begin your college career.Emory University offers both. Both places have special advantages for the Freshman & Sophomore years.Emory College provides a much larger variety of opportunities for obvious reasons.Visiting both campuses really helps understand these distinctions.
Is Oxford the “back door” into Emory.Students & faculty from both schools have debated this question for years.Yes,Oxford’s admission criteria is broader and some students are admitted who could not be admitted to Emory College for the Freshman year. However, this aspect of the school combined with the excellent faculty and high academic standards has created some interesting results.Oxford is “more diverse” than Emory and thus is a key building block in Emory’s overall foundation of diversity.Oxford students perform overall academically so well that their results challenge the alleged academic predictability that the SAT is supposed to provide colleges. This is being studied now to determine why.
