A new hope for Chinese football
These are exciting times for Shanghai football.Not just because of Shanghai Shenhua’s acquisitions of Nicolas Anelka (阿内尔卡) and Didier Drogba (德罗巴),but because lower down a division,another team from the city—Shanghai Tellace (上海特莱士)—is writing a new chapter in its young history—the team has been promoted to the Chinese Super League (CSL,中超联赛).
Indeed,whereas Shenhua has invested highly in expensive overseas recruits,Tellace is a relatively young team who relies almost completely on its youth set-up for its playing squad.
Founded in 2005 and inserted into China League Two (甲B联赛),the bottom tier of Chinese professional football in 2006,promotion into the CSL was a dream and ambition for years by the team’s owner,Mr Xu Genbao.
Having won a league title with Shenhua in 1995,Xu set up his own Xu Genbao Football Academy (徐根宝足球学校) on Chongming Island and threw himself into the development of young football players.
In 2006,Shanghai Tellace,made up of young players from his academy,played their first game in professional Chinese football.The following year,the team achieved promotion to China League One (甲A联赛) where it still remains.
Mr Xu was always waiting for his chance to come back to the highest level of Chinese professional football.Now,his dream has come true.
Shanghai Tellace,a team made up of players that have grown up together,will play on a bigger stage next year.And such a young team making it to the big time is exactly the sort of story Chinese football needs.
