He was nineteen and strong. He came from a small village far from any big town. The land was dry and it was hard to grow enough food. Even when he was a child he worked in the fields. He was quick to learn but he did not get much education. His family did not have any money to pay for school. His father died. His elder brothers looked after his mother. Some of the men of the village went to the great city to the west and some, but not all, came back with stories of huge buildings, bright lights and good jobs. He decided to see the city, work hard there and come back with enough money for his family to buy some animals and farm equipment. It took him a week walking and travelling by bus to arrive at the place of his dreams.
He stood outside the bus station and realized he did not know where to go. A friendly man came and talked to him. He was surprised to meet someone who knew the city. Sadly, the man knew the place where he was hoping to get a job and it had closed down. The man said he many friends. He could stay at his place and find work the next day. But when our hero woke the next day he looked around: no friend or bag. He knew he should never have believed the man.
It was not a good start, but he would not give up. He walked towards the part of the city where newcomers lived, where his dream might come true.
