when,为什么不选择that?

用that的话, that 作为关系代词只能代替先行词the day, 单独the day 能在定语从句中作状语吗?不能, 除非从句中有个on( 指具体某一天）,可是从句中没有on, 所以不能选that
而如果选when , 在功能上等于on which, 在意思上等于on the day.即：
Americans celebrate their independence on the day 美国人就是在这一天庆祝他们的独立
