The job market in America is tough this year for teenagers looking for part-time work.
Restaurants, clothing stores and other businesses that usually employ teenagers are cutting people.
“I’d like to get a restaurant or retail (零售) job,but it’s almost impossible,” said Brandon Burson, who is 16 and a senior at El Camino Fundamental High School in Sacramento,California.“For every one job that opens up,there are hundreds of applications (求职信).”
The poor economy in the country has left many teenagers without jobs.
The city of Sacramento has a youth vocational (职业的) program, but it got far more applicants this year than it could take on,said supervisor (主管) Cheryl Rose.
“We had 735 qualified (合格的) youth applicants for 64 jobs,” said Rose.“So we’re not even hitting 10 percent of the need.”
In recent months the agency (中介机构) has also been getting applications from “very overqualified” adults who want to work with children, she said.“These are people with two master’s degrees, and they need work.A lot of people are out there looking.”
Part-time work for teenagers is about much more than earning pocket money, concerned people say.Studies have shown that the jobs give young people skills that will help them be more successful adults.
Kathy Chow, director of Hands On Sacramento, which posts volunteer opportunities on its website, said her agency has more young people signing on.
She noted that many schools now want youngsters to do community service.President Barack Obama has also called on more Americans to volunteer.
“Kids should look at volunteering really as their first job,” she said.“They are giving their time, learning leadership and interpersonal skills. They may not be aware (知晓的) of it,but they are learning how to network. This is what they did with their summer, and it looks impressive (印象很好的) to employers,” Chow said.
