Some people complain that spending too much time watching TV will do harm to the children’s health and study.To be specific,spending long hours watching TV,children are easy to become shortsighted and get on weight; also,they will have less time for study.To this viewpoint,I have to state that we are for the children’s being allowed to watch TV since they can use television for entertainment,for information,for education as well; we do never mean that they should be allowed to watch it for too long without control.Every thing that going beyond is as wrong as falling short.On the contrary,we do mean that children should be allowed to watch TV while parents should restrict them to a recommended daily allowance,about one to two hours a day as the American Academy of Pediatrics advise.Some may object that it is easier said than done to limit the watching time.However hard,it is the parents’ responsibility to do so.For the parents’ reference,here,I would like to show a successful example.A father in Shaanxi Province has signed an agreement with his eight-year-old daughter that the daughter will get seven “tickets” every week then whenever she wants to watch TV,she should use a ticket and watch for about twenty to thirty minutes which has been signed on the tickets.In this way,not only has the little girl limited the time for watching TV to a moderate amount,but she has learnt to arrange her own time as well.
Television being one of the mass media,there are inevitably some negative contents,like violence,sex and crime,in certain programs.Books,the most traditional and pervasive media,also contain such descriptions.Internet,the most popular modern medium,the data on it is hard to control so that some harmful information is spread.Should we burn up the books and shut down the Internet for sake that our children will not imitate it.The answer is absolutely “No”.We shall never throw away the apple because of its core.Generally speaking,most of the TV programs are beneficial.“I find television to be very educational.Every time someone switches it on,I go into another room and read a good book,” said a young boy.Instead of putting blame on TV,parents should always supervise what their children watch.To provide children with suitable TV programs,our country has also made efforts—a special channel,in which the programs have been chosen,has been set up for children.
