Spring has returned, which means windows can be left open again. With the spring air streaming in through the window, one no longer wishes to remain indoors and can hardly wait to step out of the door.Yet once outside, one is overwhelmed by a superabundance of spring. The sunshine, abundant as it is,no longer appears as bright and refreshing as the beams of light piecing through the darkness inside the room. There is also a superabundance of warm breeze, not at all as refreshing as the breeze through the window chasing away the stagnant air indoor.Even the twittering of birds sounds nagging and dull without the contrast from the stillness and quiescence inside a room.Only then do we realize that spring is best enjoyed from behind a framed window, just as a painting has to be mounted and framed.
At the same time,we have come to realize that windows and doors have different functions.Doors are made for people to go in and come out,but sometimes a window has the same function. For example, burglars and secret lovers in novels seem to prefer climbing windows. Therefore the essential difference of a window from a door is by no means merely that nobody comes in and goes out through it.As far as enjoying the spring is concerned,we may safely say a door allows us to go outside while a window allows us to stay in,for a window breaks down the barrier between man and nature by bringing in breezes and sunshine. The spring thus shut in enables us to sit back and enjoy the spring without having to go out to look for it.
Thus,a door may be seen as a symbol of our desires as it enables us to go out and seek.A window,on the other hand, may be seen as a symbol of our enjoyment as it enables us to possess. This may also be true with a visitor as well as the host of the house.A visitor knocks at the door because he has some requests or enquiries to make.He is at most a guest who has to wait for his host to say yes or no.On the other hand,a person who has sneaked in through the window,be him a burglar or a secret lover, has long made up his mind to act as a temporary host of the place, with or without your permission.
