1 Select a magazine or newspaper that is known for having high standards for quality writing.The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASMe) gives annual awards for excellence in magazine print.Recent ASMe Finalists include:"The New Yorker," "Vogue," "GQ," "The Atlantic," "Rolling Stone" and "National Geographic." The Pulitzer Prizes give annual awards honoring excellence in newspaper journalism.Recent Pulitzer Prize winners include:"The Washington Post," "The New York Times," the Los Angeles Times" and "The Seattle Times."
2 Make a list of unfamiliar words from newspaper and magazine articles as you read them.
3 Use a dictionary from the reference section of the library to write down the definitions of words that are new to you.
4 Review these new words daily to improve vocabulary and spelling skills.
5 Pay close attention to a writer's choice of punctuation and sentence structure in the newspaper and magazine articles.
6 Review punctuation and sentence structure choices that you are not familiar with in "The Elements of Style" by E.B.White and William Strunk Jr..This book is considered by many to be the authority on principles and rules of English.It is available in the reference section of public libraries.
