Jean began to dress up herself with jewelry .True ,Jean’s clothes remained as before ,but she had soon got many pieces of jewelry ,some of which sparkled(闪光) like real diamonds.Around her neck she wore a pearl（珍珠）necklace.When she bought a new dress ,she would ask her husband to buy a piece of jewelry to go with it .
“Why do you want all that thing ”he would ask .
“It’s nice to have change,”she would answer sweetly .
Her husband scolded her ,saying ,“My dear ,as we can’t afford real diamonds ,you should wear imitation（仿造的）jewelry.You already have a natural beauty ,the most valuable of all jewels.”
But she would smile lovingly and say ,“What can I do I’m so fond of jewelry .I can’t change my nature .My grandmother always liked jewelry .You know she sent me some nice things when we were married .”
Then Jean would roll the pearl necklace around her fingers ,and hold up the bright gems（宝石）for her husband to see ,saying ,“Look Aren’t they lovely These aren’t imitation ,you know .”
Emil shook his head and said rather sadly ,“My dear .I’m afraid you’re fond of making believe.”
Often on an evening ,when they sat by the fireside ,she would look at the gems as if they were the most important things in life .Often she would put a necklace around her husband’s neck ,laughing heartily .
One evening she attended the opera （歌剧）with some friends ,and on her return she was wetted by a cold rain .The next morning she came down with cold fever .Eight days later she died .

经常的在某个傍晚,当他们坐在炉火旁的时候,她就会盯着那些珠宝看,仿佛那是她生命中最珍贵的东西.她常常拿条项链缠在丈夫的脖子上,开心地大笑.
一天晚上她跟一些朋友去看歌剧,回来的路上被一场冷雨淋成了落汤鸡.第二天早上就开始感冒发烧.八天以后她去世了.
