Application of plastic materials on the housings of
computer and other electronic devices has been growing
in terms of their advantages over metals,such as light
weight,design flexibility,low costs and mass production
capability.
Carbon fibre (CF) reinforced polymeric materials are
widely used as structural materials in many engineering
applications.Because they offer several advantages,such
as ease of processing,the possibility of obtaining complex
shapes,higher strength/density ratio and recycling,
short carbon fibre (SCF) reinforced thermoplastics are
of great commercial and scientific interest.It is known
that some properties of plastics are improved by the
incorporation of CF with economical processing methods
such as extrusion and injection moulding.1 The
properties of SCF reinforced thermoplastics depend not
only on the properties of the matrix and fibre but also on
the CF content,orientation and aspect ratio of the
fibres,distribution and fibre/matrix adhesion.2–6 The
high toughness values,dimensional stability and good
surface texture of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
terpolymer make it an important material for industrial
applications.Previous studies showed that incorporating
short fibre into neat ABS to balance the toughness and
stiffness resulted in an improvement of tensile strength
and modulus values,but the increase is low.Those
studies also showed that the adhesion between ABS and
fibres was poor.2,3
