Zhaozhou Bridge is a stone arch bridge that was built in more than one thousand years ago.It is the oldest bridge that is still used today in China.It is a wonderful artifact.
The grand bridge is 50 meters long and 10 meters wide.Modern scientists proved that the bridge was designed and constructed perfectly,and the design of the building can fit physical laws well.Therefore,the bridge is very firm and can exist there since one thousand years ago.
The bridge is not only firm,but also very beautiful.The arch of the bridge is similar to a bow instead of a circle so that the road of bridge is much flatter than the other arch bridges.There are many sculptures on the two sides of the bridge,they make the bridge be a great artifact.An ancient poet said that the Zhaozhou Bridge is like a rainbow or the waning moon.
I think the bridge has many interpretations.One of them is that ancient China was very good at construction and science.Cutting the building stones into blocks,making sculpture on it and Jacking up the blocks are all difficult works without modern tools and methods.The Zhaozhou Bridge proved that the ancient Chinese could do all these things by themselves.
The other interpretation is that the ancient Chinese were interested in art.Without the artistic quality of the bridge,it would be only a bridge even though it was built long ago.However,the builders of the bridge didn’t know that people would treat it as an artifact,but they believed that everything in the world should be harmonious and beautiful,even a bridge can be a scenery.Many other ancient temples,palaces and gardens of China can also prove this belief because they are beautiful as well as they are useful.
