Yes.When the financial crisis really hit in 2008 many people were afraid of losing their jobs,me included.It became almost instant for employers,including mine,to lay off people and put so much extra work on the employees that they kept.It became as if the remaining employees were asked to do double the work they would normally do.Everyone was afraid to lose their jobs so we just did the extra work.I do believe that some companies needed to do this,but I also believe it was a great time to take advantage of everyone's fear.I am concerned now that the economy is turning around,the hiring will still be slow because many employers have found ways to get the same amount of work done without having extra people.For example,my work load was increased almost 50% after the crisis started,and continued at that pace for more than an entire year.I went from working 8 to 9 hours a day to 12 to 14 hours a day,including at home on weekends to keep up with the work load.
I was not aware that I would be laid off before it happened,but my situation was fairly different from most.We lost a client of ours to a competitor and I specifically handled that particular client.So my department was laid off.The client was bought by another company and that company used a specific managing agent.This is happening often too.Many companies are being purchased and it is affecting the employment changes in other companies.I believe this is starting to settle down.When there is a downturn,which Americans have seen before,this happens.I call it shaking up the playing field.It will even out eventually.
