内蒙古大学交通学院前身为创建于1956年的交通部呼和浩特交通学校，是国家从战略布局角度在边疆少数民族地区创办的第一所工科学校，1996年被教育部批准为全国第二批高等职业教育试点学校，2000年并入内蒙古大学组建成内蒙古大学职业技术学院，2008年与内蒙古大学理工学院交通系合并组建交通学院，2009年以准厅级建制升格为内蒙古大学交通职业技术学院，在为少数民族地区培养交通人才、为自治区经济建设服务方面具有重要作用和特殊定位。
