New York Students From the Hewitt School Travel to Gulf Coast to Spread Holiday Cheer

Prep Students Donate Time and Goods to Help Those Devastated by Hurricane Katrina
NEW YORK,Nov.30 /PRNewswire/ -- A group of New York students will travel nearly 2,000 miles to spread holiday cheer to areas along the Gulf Coast.Students from the Hewitt School,an independent preparatory school for girls on the Upper East Side of Manhattan,have coordinated a toy,food and clothing drive which will culminate December 7 when they personally deliver their gifts to the region.

The holiday campaign,which started two weeks ago,will provide for the needs of families impacted by Hurricane Katrina and also will help brighten the holidays for local children by providing toys to displaced families that might not have the means to secure gifts for their children.To date,more than 1,200 new toys including dolls,games,books,sports equipment,stuffed animals and arts and crafts kits have been collected.
To distribute the donated toys,20 students and faculty from the Hewitt School will host more than 300 local families at a program in Ocean Springs,Miss.,entitled "Holiday Village." At the event,families will select toys at no charge.Adult "shoppers" also will receive gift bags containing toiletries and other items.Students from the Hewitt School will serve as personal shoppers and gift wrappers at the event.
In addition to providing toys for children,the students also will distribute more than 1,500 pounds of Thai rice to a Vietnamese shrimping community that was hit especially hard.Thai rice,which is a staple of the Vietnamese diet,has been unavailable since the recent hurricane.The rice will be distributed to local families in 25 lb.bags.Hundreds of items such as blankets,clothing and toiletries will also be distributed during the trip.
To date,the Hewitt School has raised more than $50,000 to support Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.Funds have been raised by the students through such efforts as lemonade stands,bake sales and selling hand-made stationary and jewelry.Some of the individuals and small group efforts raised more than $500.
