What a man must do
The old man of the title is Santiago, a Cuban fisherman now 85 years old. In his time he has been among the best, but as the story begins he is having a hard life. He can no longer catch fish. Now he lives with the help of a boy named Manolin. Santiago has taught him the skills needed to be a sea fisherman.
However, the old man has not caught a fish in 40 days. Because of this, the boy's parents say that manolin must work with a more successful fisherman. But the boy remains loyal to Santiago.
Santiago must face a great challenge: one in which he will need all of his strength of body, experience and willpower.
The day begins
One morning Santiago wakes the boy from his sleep. The boy finds it difficult to wake and the old man is sorry. But the boy rises,saying,“It is what a man must do.”This is important, because the story is about ordinary people and what they have to do, their duties. It is something what the boy has learned from Santiago. In a way, this book is about “what a man must do”.
After breakfast, Santiago sets out in his boat alone. We see that the old man is a fisherman of great skill and experience. He understands the sea. He can read its signs. He knows that when a man-of-war bird(军舰鸟)is round, and there are dolphins too, it means there are fish to be caught. He hooks a fish. It is clear that it is a big fish. But although the hook is in his mouth, the fish will not give up. It swims away form Santiago, pulling the boat along after him. The struggle between man and fish goes on for days and nights.
Santiago does not see the fish as his enermy.he admires the way it fights for its life,never giving up,like the old man himself.The story shows how the old man loves the sea.He loves it and all of its creatures.He feels at home there.
It is Santiago who wins.He kills the fish and begins to tow is great catch back to shore.But the old man has more to face from the sea.There are others that want the fish—sharks.The sharks each take a large part of the fish.Although Santiago manages to kill some of the sharks,in the end all that is left of the fish is a big tail,spine,and head.
