Reading Walden Lake
After the steam engine was invented,the world arrived to the stage of the Industrial Revolution.Then,the machines,engines and the tall chimneys flooded in the world,whether Great Brain or America or any other countries.Inevitably,it was pollutions and noises that appeared.
Thoreau hated that.
Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord,Massachusetts,in 1917.After graduating from Harvard University,he came back to hometown to be a teacher.In the spring of 1845,Thoreau himself went into the mountain forest of the Walden Lake,in which no settlement there.Near the lakeside,he built a wood house and lived alone.And there,he wrote the famous literature “Walden Lake”,which is pressed in 1854.
It is a healthy book can be clear-headed.In the description of the book,there is clear air in the nature,but no polluted environment in the industrial society.
It is a quiet book that full of wisdom.It analyses the life,criticizes the habitude,helps you soul-searching.
I have read the first chapter “Where I Lived,and What I Lived for”.
What I live for?Nowadays,I think seldom people will ask this question themselves.The society is full of beguiler,and everywhere we can encounter it.A advertisement show you some fantasticalities; some books tell you to be a “canny” man; one says money is omnipotent that you should earn as much as possible through any artifices.So,some people have to “run on the hurricane”,involved in the public voice,prejudice,tradition,puzzle,sham and so forth.And then it seems that no one gets the realization of the true life.
I think Thoreau knows.He knew what he lived for.He knew how to avert the loneliness.He went to cultivate the beans,listened respectfully the pitter-patter from the nature.He touched and felt the natural creatures.Since that Thoreau had the courage of one's opinions,led the life of the spirit.Today most of people are no longer themselves,they live for other’s lives at every turn,they are enslaved to the social regulation,they can’t extricate themselves from the lair.Indeed we could unfasten the chain of the life.Our longings will come true ultimately.
Quiet is a nice fettle but difficult to manage.In modern society,we are pressed
to on duty on time.We hasten to finish the work,we are tensed up by so many things.Modernist is so impatient that they haven’t any time to think.One ever asked a question that how long do you finish one meal today?
In fact every one want to be seized of nature,the peaceful water on the lake,the leaves kissed by the gentle breeze and so on.They will have the quiet frame of mind,they know what they should possess of,they know what they should give up.Giving up sometimes is not wrong,there is a Chinese saying that back off one step,you will get the further reaching.And then,we live freely,calmly,simply,and quietly as if we were drawing near the beautiful Walden Lake.
I strongly get the feeling of the dialogue between nature and human beings from Thoreau’s words.At the background of 18th century,the traditional handicraft was replaced by the industrial machines.While the industrial civilization brought the great transformation of the technology,it destroyed the nature rapidly.Thoreau felt anxious.
We seem face the similar situation.Modern society goes with popular lives,supplies luxuriant physical lives for us.We live in the enormous concrete buildings,and everywhere we could see the glabrous cement roads reflected more heats,immense plaza with no trees,we breathe in the environment with the exhaust gas,we have to endure the hoot of the noisy machines from the building sites.Oh,my god,I have enough of that style of thing!
What’s the relationship between nature and human beings?Our ancestors were enslaved to the nature,and they feared and adored the nature.But as the posterity of them,we have enough ability to conquer the nature,and then we ravage the nature.So our existing environment worsens soon.When it comes to us,should we choose to escape?Yes,one or two can do it,but the world could not avoid the calamity.Less demands,less greed,love the nature,I think,life is creative and enjoyable.
Maybe we couldn’t find a Xanadu like the virgin Walden Lake,but if we got less desire,more favor,gave a loving embrace to the nature,infused new life into us,then,we will live simply and happily.
