Lindon is of course far too big.Transport is a terrible problem.A
bus takes about an hour and a half to get from one side of the town to the other.There are constant traffic delays,and parking in the central area has to be contronlled by parking meters.Hence
the necessity for the London underground electric railway system,
including the "tube" railway which runs in small tunnels so far below the surface that passengers descend by means of moving staircases called escalators.There are about 300 stations belonging to eight separate underground systems,some rising to the surface outside the central area and penetrating beyond the suburbs.
Most of the people who work in the central London area have their
homes in the suburbs or elsewhere,so every morning and every evening the whole public transport system is choked with travelers.At fine week-ends and hoildays the suburbs themselves are crowded with traffic taking people out into the countryside or toward the sea,and it may take you a whole hour of motoring before you can get clear of the town and start to breathe the fresher country air.Hence the anxiety which arose when new suburban building caused London to spread further and further outwards,swallowing up more and more of the countyrside;and hence the attempts which have since been made to halt this process by establishing a "green belt" on which building is strictly controlled,and by developing new towns thirty miles or so away.
