文学与现实的关系,或者说文学如何在现实世界中存在的问题,在整个文学理论体系中具有奠定性的地位.准确地说,文学与现实存在着双向的建构关系：一方面现实世界构成了文学的本源,一切文学作品都来源于现实的客观世界；另一方面,文学作品可以建构区别与客观现实世界的“陌生化”世界,并以特殊的方式反作用与客观现实.因而,文学既是客观现实一面镜子,折射真实的现实世界,又是反作用于现实的一种力量.尤其是在民族衰落的历史时期,文学更能发挥出抗争消极现实的积极作用,同时可以表现出一种拯救危亡民族的强大力量.拉丁美洲魔幻现实主义文学代表作《百年孤独》是二十世纪文坛中引人注目的文学作品,它的问世引起了一场震撼世界文坛的“文学爆炸”.它正如一面魔幻的镜子,毫不失真地映射了拉美民族百年历史衰落的悲剧,同时又塑造了一个不同于客观世界的非理性世界来抗争衰败的现实世界.而拉美文学的民族危难时期的崛起对拯救整个民族具有重大的意义,同样的,中国五四时期的新文学也是在民族危机中应运而生的文学,对于唤醒民族记忆,挽救民族自信发挥了历史性的作用.
