With over 6,000 different languages in the world,I am not suggesting you learn all of them.What we are recommending is that if you plan to spend time with one particular culture,you learn all you can about their specific language.You would be far more effective if you could speak Spanish when doing business in Mexico.Because much of the world speaks English,many Americans have a tendency to assume they need not learn a foreign language.With over 20 million people in the United States being foreign-born,you can see why we urge you to try to expend the time and energy to learn a language different from your own.
If you do not speak the foreign language of you r communication partner,there still are things you can do to facilitate understanding.Try to keep in mind that language is more than a vehicle of communication:it teaches on a culture’s lifestyle,ways of thinking and perceiving the world,and different patterns of interacting.
In much of the world English is taught as a second language,and therefore you will face countless situations when you will be in a country where you are speaking English to someone who might not be as fluent in the language as you are.
I can provide an excellent example around us.
The Chinese are yet another culture that perceives and uses language in a manner different form most Americans.As geo and ting-Toomey note,“speech in Chinese culture is constantly exercised with caution and,consequently,perceived as less important.” This lack of emphasis on the spoken word means that the Chinese “believe that talk has limitations and that meanings reside beyond mere words.” Knowing this simple facet about Chinese language usage could help you in two ways.First,you could understand why “the ability to surmise and decipher hidden meanings is highly desirable in the Chinese culture.” Second,knowing the Chinese view of language could influence the manner in which you send and receive messages from members of the Chinese culture and also how you deal with silence

我认为前三段可以连上,第四段和前面逻辑关系不强.
第一段是作者劝说读者多学几种外语及其理由.
第二段是讲如果不学外语也有别的方式可以和生意伙伴沟通.
第三段是讲英语的普及性和你将碰到英语水平不同的人.
第四段是作者举的一个例子,举例说明中文与英语的差异性.因为开头并未说明这个例子是关于什么的,因此和前三段着重说明英语的内容有点衔接不上.最好是加一个过渡句,引出第四段的内容.
