"Can I see the manager alone?"I asked.
"Certainly,"the manager led the way to a private room.
"You'll open a large account,I suppose."
"Fairly large,"I replied in a low voice,"fifty-six dollars!"
Without a word,he got up,"This gentleman will deposit$fifty-six."
Having exchanged the ball of money for a thin bankbook,I remembered that I needed 6 dollars for present use,so I asked the clerk,"Can I draw a cheque?"
He threw me a chequebook.I wrote the sum and passed it back.
"What!Are you drawing it all out?"he was suprised.
I suddenly realized my mistake,but refusing to admit it,I answered bravely,"Yes,every cent of it."
"How will you have it?"he continued.
"In fiftites."
"And the six?"he said dryly.
"In sixes."
I took a fifty-dollar bill together with six-dollar coins and rushed out.
