字幕翻译是一种特殊的语言转换类型,即把原声口语的浓缩成书面译文.字幕翻译包括可在理论上分开而实际上密不可分的三层含义：两种语言信息传递,语篇的简化或浓缩,以及口语转换为书面语.字幕翻译的后两层含义使它有别于其他翻译类型.对原文的删减在其他翻译类型中虽然也有,但绝不会达到字幕翻译中这样的广泛性和力度.口译和笔译中语篇方式没有变化,不存在口语和书面语间的转换,而字幕翻译则经历从口语到书面语（确切地说文字）的转换,难怪称之为“对角线的翻译”（李运兴,2001）.由于是通过语言的翻译来传达原片的艺术效果,因此语言的艺术性是字幕翻译中至关紧要的因素.选取观众最熟悉,最易于接受的言词,语句来翻译原片是字幕翻译的基本原则.
字幕翻译的特点
通俗性
字母是闪现在屏幕上的文字，一现即逝。电影或其他影像节目本身的特点决定了字幕翻译语言的瞬时性。影片里的画面，声音都是按照剧情的发展需要转瞬即逝的。一般的文学作品，如散文，小说等，其语言以书面的形式出现在纸上，读者可以一遍一遍地看，可以字斟句酌。而现场欣赏影视作品则不然，观众没有机会像阅读文学作品的语言那样，一遍看不懂再回过头去看第二遍。影视剧中的语言若是一遍听不懂，只能放弃，若是花时间去琢磨，则会影响到欣赏后面的内容。因此，电影电视节目的这一特点也要求字幕翻译语言必须大众化或通俗化，要让人一看就懂。

字幕宜选用常用词，小词和简短的词语；句式宜简明，力戒繁复冗长，小心使用过唱的从句，插入语和分词结构。这种简洁性使翻译在字数上有一个的限定性，要尽可能地用相等或相近的语言来表现原语。电影本身的语言比较简洁精练，翻译的语言应该反映这一特征，不能拖泥带水
