Lost and Found in the Old and New Shanghai
When I arrived in Shanghai five years ago,I knew very little about the city.But I had a map and a sense of curiosity,and so I set out to explore China’s biggest city.Each weekend became an adventure as I “discovered” different parts of the city.I got lost a lot but that was okay since,every time I got lost,I “found” something:an interesting market or shop; a friendly old neighbourhood.
Changing fast
At one point,I was thinking of writing a book and calling it “Lost and Found in Shanghai.” But I had to drop the idea.Shanghai was just changing too fast and many of the places I had “found” were quickly disappearing.For example,there was a very friendly neighbourhood south of Fuxing Rd.near Zhongshan Rd.The streets were narrow and the houses were old,but the people were very friendly.Recently,I returned to the area but the narrow streets and the old houses had disappeared and been replaced by big apartment buildings.
Greatly improved
I felt a bit sad but then I realized that the lives of the people who lived there had been greatly improved.The old houses were small and had no toilets or hot water systems.Women had to wash their laundry outside during the winter.Their hands became red and sore from the cold water.Children had to play in the streets where it was not safe.
The many changes I have seen in Shanghai have been for the better.Yes,the traffic may have gotten worse,but the lives of the people have gotten better.The “better city” has given them a “better life.”
