As we all know,English is spoken by about 175 countries and regions,and is one of the working languages of the United Nations.Since China adopted the policy of reform and opening to the outside world,it has much more contact with the outside world in terms of culture,economy and technologies.Therefore,the number of people learning English in China is increasing rapidly,and English has changed our lives greatly.It is very important for us to master English well,and I would like to illustrate this in a three ways.
Firstly,English broadens our horizons.With better English,we can read many original English books without being confused by some awkward translations,which will give us a better understanding of other cultures.There are great differences between Chinese and English cultures,such as traditions,values,religions,manners and so on.It is very amazing to know how people living in other countries live their lives.Good English skill will also help us to see the world from another perspective,and thoroughly understand current affairs in the world,with more creative thinking and new ideas formed in mind.
Secondly,good English skills give young men an edge to compete in job markets.English is a global language used in many fields such as international communication,trade,research and cooperation.Since more and more international companies such as IBM,HP,and Siemens set up their branches in China,and an increasing number of Chinese companies have much more opportunities to conduct trade with foreign companies,the demand for people with great English skills has been soaring,and some companies even make it the requisite for their employees.Therefore,better English skills can make one stand out from the crowd and earn one a good job.
Last but not the least,English enriches our daily life and gives us more fun.Believe it or not,Chinese has also borrowed many English words and accepts them in daily use.The most frequent practice to describe new things starting from the English-speaking countries is to transliterate it.The transliterations of many English words such as “sofa”,“coffee”,“coca”,“blog”,“bar”,“club”,“cool”,“humor” are well accepted by Chinese people and they form a part of our daily lives.These words enrich our word expressions and make our life more colorful.
There are still many other advantages of learning English well,and I will not illustrate one by one here.Better English not only can broaden our eyes,sharpen our minds,equip us with great communication skills with foreigners,but also enriches our own language uses.Therefore,it is without doubt that better English,better life.
