The Kharaib B is approximately 85 feet thick,but only the top
30 feet are of reservoir quality.The reservoir is laterally
uniform throughout Block 5 and consists of high porosity,low
permeability grainstone and packstone.Microporosity within
grains and lime mud dominates,but locally vuggy and fracture
porosity are present.
The gross thickness of the Shuaiba reservoir is up to 90 feet.
This reservoir is laterally more variable than the Kharaib B.In
some areas the Shuaiba consists of moderate porosity
wackestone units separated by impermeable marl layers,while
in other areas it consists of a more uniform sequence of high
porosity,high permeability algal/rudist packstone and
grainstone.
The Nahr Umr Formation comprises an approximately 100
feet thick sequence of non-calcareous shale overlying a
sandstone reservoir 5 – 15 feet thick.In some areas,the
sandstone is poorly consolidated and has high permeability.
Elsewhere,siderite,dolomite and pyrite cementation has
significantly reduced reservoir quality.
The three reservoirs contain oil accumulations with overlying
gas caps.The oil properties vary significantly both between
and laterally within reservoirs.The reservoirs are only slightly
overpressured.H2
S occurs in high concentrations in the
carbonate intervals below the Umm Er Rhaduma,but is
largely absent from the Nahr Umr.

Well placement in the thin low permeability
reservoirs is critical for optimal production performance.
Further,the 2–10 feet thick Nahr Umr sand is deposited
between two reactive shales,necessitating careful well
placement to minimize drilling related problems.State of the
art logging while drilling tools have been employed and real
time azimuthal density and/or resistivity data has been used to
steer wells both in the carbonate and sandstone reservoirs.
Onsite geologists are continuously integrating the logging data
with drill cutting data and data from neighbouring wells to
actively steer the wells for optimal position in the reservoirs.
