在指南针发明之前 人类辨别方向主要靠太阳,月亮等天体,或者山石树木等标志物,然而,这些辨别方向的手段都有其局限性:靠天体辨别方向 在恶劣的天气环境下就无法实现,比如雨天,雾天,阴天.而靠标志物辨别方向 只能局限于小的范围内.
后来 人们发现磁石的南北极特性而发明了指南针.从而可以在任何环境下准确的辨别方向.
指南针最大的贡献是促进了航海的发展,海上运输的发达以及发现新大陆等指南针都功不可没.
