Since you now realize that what is taught in educational systems varies between cultures,you should not be surprised to find there are also differences in how students and teachers participate in the learning process.Being familiar with what a culture teachers can give you insight into that culture.Knowing how teaching occurs within a culture is just as important because it (1) provides knowledge about the nature of the culture,(2) helps you understand interpersonal relationships among students and between students and teachers,and (3) helps you understand the importance a culture places on education.
The formal education process prevalent in a culture is tied directly to the values and characteristics of that culture.It is common in some cultures for teachers to talk or lecture a great deal of the time,whereas in other cultures students do most of the talking.Silence and minimal vocal participation is characteristic of some classrooms,whereas others tend to be noisy and active.In many cultures,students listen and then write down what their teacher has said rather than using individual textbooks.This is particularly true in countries where the economy prohibits the luxury of individual textbooks.Also,as you shall see,the authority vested in the teacher differs from culture to culture.Even nonverbal aspects such as space,distance,time,and dress codes are cultural variables that are reflected in classroom behavior.We will pause for a moment to look at some of the diverse behaviors that reveal the uniqueness of some cultures’ classrooms.
