The largest sandy desert in the world is called Rub al Kali,which means Empty Quarter.It is one of the driest places on Earth,and much of it has not been explored yet.The Empty Quarter covers four countries:Saudi Arabia,the United Arab Emirates,Omeanand Yemen.It is a wild.tough place,and the people who live in the Empty Quarter are called the Bedouin people.They have lived on the land there for thousands of years.
The Empty Quarter first became famous because of oil.People from Europe and America thought that there might be oil there,and they were right.Some of the largest oil fields in the world are found in the Empty Quarter,and these have made countries such as Saudi Arabia very rich.
The Empty Quarter covers a huge area.It is about the same size as France,and is a very hard place for the Bedouin people to live in.The bedouin people could not live here if it were not for camels.Camels can carry very heavy loads on their backs for many days without water,which is very important in the desert.A came's feet are very wide,so they do not fall when the sand is soft.The Bedouin people get their milk,meat,wool,leather and transport from camels.Even today the Bedouin people believe it is easier to move in the desert with a camel than a four-wheel drive truck!
