月亮渐渐地爬出来,银色的水面不断地泛起静静的波纹……突然,詹姆斯的鱼竿猛地被拉弯了,他马上意识到那是个大家伙.他吸了一口气使自己镇静下来,开始慢慢地遛那个大家伙.父亲一声不响,只是时不时地扭过脸来看一眼儿子,眼光里是欣赏和赞许.
两个小时过去了,大家伙终于被詹姆斯遛的筋疲力尽了,詹姆斯开始慢慢地收钩.那个大家伙一点点的露出水面.詹姆斯的眼珠都瞪圆了：我的天哪,足有10公斤!这是他见到过的最大的鱼.詹姆斯尽力压抑住紧张和激动的心情,仔细地观看自己的战利品,他发现,这不是翻车鱼,而是一条大鲈鱼!
父子俩对视了一下,又低头看着这条大鱼.在暗绿色的草地上,大鱼用力地翻动着闪闪发亮的身体,鱼鳃不停地上下扇动.父亲划着一根火柴照了一下手表,是晚上十点钟,离允许钓鲈鱼的时间还差两小时!
父亲看了看大鱼,又看了看儿子,说：“孩子,你得把它放回水里去.”
“爸爸!”詹姆斯大叫起来.
“你还会钓到别的鱼的.”
“可再也钓不到这么大的鱼呀!”儿子大声抗议.
詹姆斯向四周望去,月光下,没有一个垂钓者,也没有一条船,当然也就没有一个人会知道这件事.他又一次回头看着父亲.
父亲再没有说话.詹姆斯知道没有商量的余地了,他使劲地闭上眼睛,脑中一片空白.他深深地吸了一口气,睁开了眼睛,弯下腰,小心翼翼地把鱼钩从那大鱼的嘴上摘下来,双手捧起这条沉甸甸的、还在不停扭动着的大鱼,吃力地把它放入水中.
那条大鱼的身体在水中嗖地一摆就消失了.詹姆斯的心中十分悲哀.
这是三十四年前的事了.今天的詹姆斯已经是纽约市一个成功的建筑设计师,他父亲的小屋还在那湖心小岛上,詹姆斯时常带着他的儿女们去那里钓鱼.
