Abstract--This paper presents a new practical accelerated overcurrent protection scheme for single circuit breaker radial distribution feeder and the implementation of this new scheme into latest numerical relay.Extensive tests have been conducted using the real time digital simulator (RTDS) with respect to a typical single circuit breaker multi-section system.The results prove that the new protection relay is able to not only significantly increase the speed of responses of conventional time grading protection scheme for single circuit breaker radial distribution feeders,but also remove faults from both ends of the protected lines section,therefore to achieve distribution automation.

I.INTRODUCTION
HE security and reliability of distribution system are important to the customer due to the reason that it supplies to the customer directly.With the rapid development of power network,it becomes more and more important for the distribution system to provide high quality power.As such,the associated protection system must also provide fast,secure and reliable operation.However,the conventional time graded overcurrent protection may lead to maximum tripping times too long to prevent excessive disturbance of the power system.Furthermore,the tripping can only be made at one end
(the source end) of the protected line section for radial connected line or open ring systems.Expensive communication channels have to be used to achieve distribution automation for such systems.Moreover,the failure of communication channels will degrade the reliability of the protection system.Therefore,it would be beneficial if the speed of response of the overcurrent based protection scheme could be substantially increased without the need for communication link.It will also be more desirable that the
faulty line section can be automatically removed from both ends to enable the restore power supply to the healthy line sections.
