Mardi Gras is a traditional holiday celebrated in many of the southern states of the USA.The most famous celebration takes place in New Orleans,Louisiana.People there enjoy this celebration by going to parades.They catch beads,coins,cups and trinkets that are all thrown from floats.
Mardi Gras came to New Orleans in 1699.Mardi Gras means"Fat Tuesday"and of course is celebrated on that day of the week.The date can fall between February3 and March 9.It is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.
On that day,people go to parades.Parades are put on by carniva organizations.Every year,each organization picks a king and queen.They rule that parade.The floats are decorated to show different themes.The floats are pulled by tractors.Most parades have at least 15 floats.People who belong to the organization ride on the floats.They throw beads,coins,cups and trinkets to the crowd.
Following the parade,the organization usually has a ball.In the ball,their king,queen and members show up.
If you go to a parade,you are surely to go home with some of the famous catches.You can easily get any of the following things by shouting the famous sentence,"Throw me something,Mister!"
Beads are plastic necklaces.They are of different colors,shapes and sizes.They stand for jewels that royalty would wear.
