Similar Fireworks, Different New Years
Both in the western world and in the eastern world, New Year's Day, which falls on Jan 1st, is an important festival that represents a new beginning when people send off the old days and welcome the new ones.In China, it is called "Yuandan". However, according to different traditions and religions, different cultures have different ways to celebrate the new year's arrival. In the west, people have Christmas, while in China we have the Spring Festival---Chinese New Year in the lunar canlendar.
On New year's Eve, my friends and I held a party, singing and dancing. When it was almost midnight, we went outside to the Grand Square to watch the big clock strike 12 to welcome the new year's arrival. The crowd jumped and shouted with joy.
As for the Spring Festival, my family went on a trip to Harbin, where we united with my grandparents, my aunts and uncles. We decorated the house with red "Fu" and couplets, which are considered to bring good luck. Fireworks were set off to frighten away an imaginary devil "Nian" in the legend. After enjoying a beautiful snow and ice show in the People's Park, we ate dumplings, watched the Spring Festival Gala and stayed awake to welcome the Year of Monkey. Children are especially happy during the festival, because they can get "Hongbao" from their parents and elder relatives, which is called "Yasuiqian"---another tradition and custom.
To most Chinese like me, the Spring Festival is of more value and interest. As for my family, the Lunar New Year is more important, because all the family members will go home and reunite. What a great time to get together!
