KEY DECISIONS ON
STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGIES
UMTS incorporates the latest radio and network
technologies.Three key decisions are essential for
the success of it (Fig.2):first,to use CDMA for
the UTRA,the so-called Uu interface; second,to
build the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network
(UTRAN) on ATM,including the Iu interface;
and third,to reuse and enhance existing GSM network
elements for the UMTS core network.
