请问倒装可以这么倒吗?

Never before had a group of artists been so isolated from society and from official patronage as were the so-called impressionists.
我认为主语是impressionists,系动词were,但是前面又有had和been,如果as是连接词的话,那后面就不是主系表结构了,as真是纠结啊!
不懂的就不要来了...

so...as 是个搭配,表示“像.般的如此...”
as 后面的were 和前面artist 后面的been对应,做了省略和倒装,可以补充改写为：as the so-called impressionists were isolated from society and from official patronage.
主体部分是：

再去除倒装,就是
No group of artists had ever been so isolated as the impressionists were.
