This arrangement greatly simplifies the automation of
the traction control system as no external mechanical
drives will be needed. To bring the tractor motion under
computer control, external voltages that lie within the above
mentioned ranges are generated using analog outputs of an
interface card. By interfacing the pulse train to a counter,
a measure of the tractor speed is obtained. Currently, this
feedback is utilized for PID control of the tractor speed. To
ensure the complete functionality of the manual operation
as well as the automatic operation, the signals from the
pedals were multiplexed with the two corresponding analog

seat switch that is normally activated by the presence of
an operator was multiplexed with the watchdog signal.
The multiplexer is actuated by a manual/auto switch. This
switch also disconnects the power supply to the steering
motor and the loader valves thereby enabling unhindered
manual operation of the traction, steering and loader systems.
The software that runs on the on-board computer isdescribed
in Section VII.
