A look at the roadsides of America, where ugly junked automobile ruin the view from New York to California, makes one wonder whether any number of shredders can do all the work there if to do .In Philadelphia, the number of cars abandoned on the streets in a single year was over twenty-two thousand. In New York,it was eighty-two thousand. In San Francisco, police officer Thomas Hull says:”We’re taking a hundred and twenty-five to a hundred and fifty abandoned cars off the streets every week, but people are leaving them faster than we can pick them up.”
A number of reasons are given for the problem of people who just get out of used cars for sale, which makes it possible for a person to buy one for very little money and throw it away when something goes wrong.Second, there is the low trade-in value of old cars. And,of course, there if the increasing expense of having a car.
In spite of the difficulties, some cities and states are beginning to make progress.New York has taken many more abandoned cars off the streets in the last few years under a plan that puts the Sanitation Department in charge of this work.In Baltimore, city officials say they have cleared away most of the ownerless cars in the city by selling them to metal-shredding companies, and a similar program is under way in Chicago. In California, the state government has passed a new law under which all auto owners will pay one dollar extra, for one year only,to pay for one-time cleanup of cars that people throw away. There too the cars will be fed into machines.
Still, many difficulties remain, especially outside the cities. The cost of moving junked cars---even when they have been flattened to save space---is so high that it simply is not worthwhile to move a car if the shredding machine if more than two hundred miles away.
The first car shredder was built by Mr.Proler and his three brothers in 1958.Before that ,they used a compression system that turns a car into a small square of metal in a few seconds.“The trouble is,” says Mr.Proler,” that when you press the cars into a package, you have to press a lot of other stuff with it,and the result is poor quality steel when you melt it down.We wanted to get the high quality steel the car was made from and get rid of the glass, cloth, and other material. The new shredders do that for us.”
With steel prices going up and many cities and states starting cleanup plans, the question of what to do with cars that people throw away may soon be answered. We will use the metal from junked cars to build new ones.
