1. Dot pitch
The so called dot pitch is the distance between two phosphors with similar colors in a pixel. The screen is made of millions of pixels, and each pixel consists of red, blue and green phosphors. Pixels are packed tightly, so the distance between two same color phosphors in different pixels is defined as the dot pitch. Currently, CRT monitors have dot pitches from 0.22 mm to 0.26 mm; LCDs, on the other hand, due to its distinct core technology, have dot pitches from 0.297 mm to 0.32 mm.
2. Resolution
Resolution is one of the most important specifications of a monitor. It is the count of all horizontal and vertical dots (which form lines and areas displayed). A higher resolution contains more information in a unit area. For a CRT that supports 1280X1024 resolution, no matter the resolution is 320X240 or 1280X1024, the display results will be fairly good (due to electron current's elastic tuning effect). However, this CRT's highest resolution isn't necessarily the best in reality. For instance, on a 17 inch monitor, a 1280X1024 resolution makes the font displayed in WINDOWS very small, and thus tires the eye after long period of usage. Therefore, the resolution of a 17 inch monitor should be set to 1024X768.
LCD has a completely different story. LCD's highest resolution is its native, and best resolution. Once a lower resolution is used (for example, when a 15 inch with 1024x768 native resolution is set to 800x600), there will be two display modes. One is center, where only the central parts of the LCD displays the 800x600 image, and the rest of the unused dots will remain dark, making the image look smaller. Another is stretch, which uses all the dots on the display. But since pixels are stretched, the display effects are worse than normal.
