4.SAMPLE AND DATA
A panel of 20 domestic commercial banks have been included in the investigation.Balanced sheet
information for the years 1989 to 1996 will be employed.Initially all commercial banks have been
included in the analysis.However,after following through their annual reports for several years,all
foreign banks have to be dropped from the analysis.Prior to 1994,all foreign banks operate as branches
of their home banks and as such are not required to publish separate statements of accounts of their
branch operations in Malaysia other than the consolidated accounts of their parent banks.Out of the
remaining domestic banks (23),2 banks are dropped because of a merger with or take-over by another
bank and one is relatively a new bank,established only in 1994.The final sample then includes only 20
commercial banks.
This study will utilise information obtained from annual reports of banks included in the investigation.
A comprehensive database system containing information that is readily accessible is lacking in
Malaysia,unlike that of the countries in the western world.Even in the advent of several new
international databases,information pertaining to Malaysian commercial banks is quite limited.This
study may be impeded by the non-availability of data and the confidentiality maintained by banks in the
disclosure of certain information.To circumvent this problem,the variables used will rely heavily on
published balance sheet information.Additionally,further information will be supplied from annual
reports and quarterly bulletins of the Central Bank of Malaysia.
Data are pooled for the years from 1989 to 1996.

Empirical analysis is performed on a panel of 20
commercial banks.Table 2 summarises some descriptive statistics of variables used in this empirical
analysis.
As mentioned earlier,the banking market in Malaysia is highly concentrated.The mean for the one-
bank concentration (CRN1) is about 22% and the two-bank concentration (CRN2) is 39% while that of
the three-bank concentration (CRN3) and the five-bank concentration (CRN5) are 49% and 60%
respectively.

Our empirical analysis uses all four concentration measures to examine the effect of
changes in market structure on performance.CRN3 though the most commonly used measure of market
structure does not lend itself the most appropriate variable and therefore,should be verified empirically
(Evanoff and Fortier,1988).Hence,the choice of CRN1,CRN2 and CRN5 as alternative measures for
market structure is considered for this investigation.
