American culture is rooted in the Puritan culture,when introduced by the Puritans to North America.Mainstream American values,can be traced back to colonial domination of the Puritan culture.
The mid-16th century Puritans within the Church of England to Calcutta for the banner of reformist literature that they were not satisfied with the church reform,and eliminate corruption,persecution,fled to the North American continent,and rooted in American Puritanism."They promote diligence clean living,like the New World built their city upon a hill" ①.
Puritan immigrants constitute the main body of the then North America,in northern New England is an all-Puritan."Puritanism became one of common values,to promote the idea that they are:piety,humility,serious,honest,industrious and thrifty" ②.In these values,the Puritans fear unfamiliar and dangerous environment,overcome difficulties,quickly harvested in the wild land of prosperity and abundance.Therefore,they are more convinced that their Puritanism,ambitious to expand territory,and indeed in American history is a history of continued westward expansion,the values of Puritanism also will spill into the broader allocation of land ."In the 200 years of vicissitudes changes,like a melting pot of American culture has absorbed the essence of the world's many civilizations,became a distinctive feature of the pluralistic,open cultural system.It contains almost all the world,race,ethnicity,religious,ideological and academic value,but always WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) culture of the mainstream,its core is respect for hard work of the Puritan ethic "③.Bass and other historians said:"There is no understanding of American Puritanism,it is impossible to understand American society." ④ Puritanism laid the foundation of American society,has shaped the American character,from all influence on American community.5 Puritanism lay the foundation for American democracy 下面是汉译美国文化源于清教文化,由清教徒移民时传入北美.美国主流价值观都可以追溯到殖民地时期一统天下的清教文化.
