I am the oldest child of my parents and the first in my family to go to college. My father quit school at 15 because he needed to work.
As a child, the only men I saw in suits were at church, and the only people I knew who had gone to college were teachers.Women were homemakers and mothers. When I was 6,my father told me I would go to college. That was my first key moment, because I believed him even though I didn’t know what college was.I just knew I was going there.
Everyone has infinite opportunities for choices. These most often present themselves in our lives through another person or discovery. There have been many such opportunities in my life, but two others stand out.
The first was my discovery of reading.Books took me far beyond the small Mid-western farming community of Fisher,III.,where I grew up.Reading opened up the world.I read all the books in our small school library. My parents never limited what I read or the time I could spend reading.
It was through books I learned about possibilities. The possibility of living other places,of meeting interesting people,of education,of any career I chose.
The other opportunity was a conversation with Janelle Calsyn,my high school English and speech teacher.I was a senior and she was probably only a few years older, having just graduated from college. She knew I was having a hard time fighting out how to get from point A --- Fisher,III.--- to point B --- college and beyond.
One day after school,Mrs.Calsyn and I were sitting in the high school cafeteria at a folded-down metal table, editing and laying out the school paper. She talked to me as an equal, and told me I could accomplish whatever I wanted to accomplish.I believed her.Because I was fortunate enough to be in a high school cafeteria with Mrs.Calsyn in Fisher,III.,in 1967,I received the encouragement I needed at that moment in my life.
Each of those opportunities --- my father telling me at age 6 that I would go to college, the discovery of reading, and Janelle Calsyn --- made a profound difference in my life.
