Types of Jigs
Jigs are made in a wide variety of different styles.The specific style or type of jig which should be used for a particular application is generally determined by the workpiece itself.The two general categories of jigs are open and closed.Open jigs are normally used for parts which only require ma-chining on a single surface,or side.Closed jigs are used to machine parts which require operation son more than one side or surface.The terms commonly used to describe specific types of jigs within each category are generally associated with the basic appearance or construction of the jig.
Template jigs.Template jigs are generally flat,open jigs which are used to locate the general
position of drilled holes.This type of jig does not normally contain any device for clamping or securing the jig to the workpiece ,but relies on auxiliary clamps to hold the jig when necessary.Template jigs are the least expensive type of jig,and are frequently used where extreme accuracy is not re-quired.When used for limited production,template jigs do not normally contain drill bushings.Instead,the entire jig plate is hardened.Figure 4-3-1 shows several examples of applications for which template jigs are well suited.
Plate jigs.Plate jigs are a somewhat more sophisticated variation of the basic template jig.These jigs are generally more accurate and durable than template jigs and also include a means to securely clamp the workpiece.The principal variations of the plate jig commonly used for stationary work hold-ers are the plain plate jig,table jig and the sandwich jig.
Plain plate jigs.Plain plate jigs ( Figure 4-3-2) consist of a jig plate which forms the main
body of the jig and contains the drill bushings ( when used),locators and clamping de-
vice.Depending on the complexity of the workpiece,it is often less expensive to make several plate jigs than a single box,or closed jig.
