People used sundials and their hands to tell time in the Middle Ages.I found this handy experiment that explains how to tell time without a watch!
First,we need to know what time the sun rises.I found that in the newspaper.Then,in the morning go to a place where you can see the horizon line.I stood up on a high hill overlooking the city.(Try this from a tall building or another high place near your home.It also works well in wide open,flat places like soccer field.) I put my arms straight out in front of me and faced where the sun rises.I turned my hands so the palms faced me and my longest fingers touched.I lined up the bottom edge of my hangs with the horizon line.The horizon is where the Earth curves to meet the sky.Then I placed my left hand above my right hand,putting one hand above the other… counting the number of hands from the horizon to the sun.One hand equals one hour.Next,I added the number of hands to sunrise time.I used a watch to compare times,and I was only 10 minutes off!
