The terrible earthquake of Tangshan happened in the city of Tangshan , Hebei Province on July 28th，1976，which caused more than 240 000 deaths and the whole city was destroyed. It is the deadliest earthquake of the twentieth century.
When the earthquake took place, the people were sleeping, unaware of the disaster that was to happen to them. As the earth began to shake, a few people who were awake had the forethought to hide under a table, but most were asleep and did not have time. The entire earthquake lasted about 14 to 16 seconds.
After the earthquak ,about240 000 people were dead or dying, along with most of the people who were badly hurt. A large number of houses and buildings were destroyed .
