3.Results
One-hundred and ninety-nine students completed the questionnaire fully (17%); 119 (60%) were women and 80 (40%) were men.Of the respondents,21% were in their first year at medical school,32% in their second year and 15%,18% and12% in years 3,4 and 5,respectively.A further 2% of respondents were taking a year out of their medical course between years 2 and 3 to study for a Bachelor of Science degree in a subject related to medicine.Eighty-two percent of respondents
were white and 92% described themselves as British.This is a representative group because it is very similar to the demographics of the students in the medicine class,which was 39% men,61% women,with 10% of the students from overseas.A total of 29 students had participated in the peer-group sexeducation project,and 15 failed to answer this question.
The mean total score for confidence with the case vignettes was significantly higher for students who had done the sex-education project compared with those who had not (40.4 vs.35.3,p =0.001) (Fig.1).This significant difference was maintained when the mean scores when each of the four cases was compared individually (p =0.001 for each case,Table 1).Among the students completing the
questionnaire,there was no significant difference in total confidence scores between male and female medical students (Fig.2).However,when individual cases were compared it appeared that students felt more comfortable dealing with patients of the same gender as themselves.Although students confidence in dealing with the cases appeared to increase as they progressed through medical

school (Fig.3),differences between the year groups were not significantly different.Less than 35% of the medical students felt that medical school had prepared them well for dealing with these cases regardless of their year of study.
4.Discussion
The majority of medical students training at the University of Edinburgh felt ill-equipped to deal with patients presenting with four common sexual/reproductive health problems.However,students who had participated in the peer sex-education project felt more confident than their peers who had not had this experience.Our findings are consistent with those of others.Peer educators from a sexual health project in 10 American universities [6] were evaluated using a questionnaire administered three times over the course of a year to establish whether there was a change in their confidence.Peer educators developed increased levels of self-esteem and personal development in addition to reporting that they themselves had adopted safer sexual behavior following the program.
