According to the statistics elderly people who leave alone make up a significant segment of the U.S.population.In fact,the number of people above 65 years of age who live alone reached 9.5 million.In many cases living alone in elder age can be dangerous.Every hospital has a record of an old person being brought by ambulance with a tiny note “found at home”.
Stroke,injuries from falling,acute cardiac decease or some other factors can lead to the situation when the person becomes unable to move or even reach out for telephone.A person can remain laying on the floor for many hours or even days until he or she is discovered.One third of these attacks results in death.In many cases the victims were ill with untreatable mortal disease,nevertheless,they have spent their last hours being absolutely helpless.
In about a quarter of such cases the patients were suffering from alcoholism,drug abuse or psychical disorders,and their immobilized condition was the result of their self-destructive behavior.
The consequences of being “found down” are severe.As it was mentioned before that about one third of these people are found dead.From those who were taken to the hospital about 10 % died on the hospital bed,about one third required intensive care and only a low percentage was able to return home.All the rest had to face the necessity to attend one or another form of the long-term care being unable to deal with their daily routine by themselves any more.
The risk of being “found down” in the group over 65 years of age is estimated at about 3.2%.This figure is approximately as big as the risk of stroke and myocardial infection combined.Taking into account that more than 9.5 million elderly people live alone all over the country it is easy to estimate that the number of people who face the problem every year is about 300,000.It means that this many elderly Americans are found on the floor in their houses dead or immobilized and helpless.
It should also be noted,that these figures are based on the hospital statistics,so they do not include the people who were found dead for so long that the call was made not to ambulance but to the undertaker.The statistics also omit cases when the victims were helped without calling to the ambulance.In this regard,it also should be noted that elderly people who live with their families are also at risk since they often stay alone for extended periods of time.
