To facilitate standardization,in 1990 CDC organized the Cholesterol Reference Method Laboratory Network(CRMLN) to provide access to the NRS/CHOL for both manufacturers and clinical laboratories.The CRMLN has developed a method comparison protocol leading to certification for analytical systems,reagent applications,calibrators and reference materials.Because matrix effects complicate the traditional approaches to assessing accuracy,the certification protocol offered by the CRMLN is based on analysis of fresh patient samples.Specimens are selected to cover a clinical meaningful range,with values uniformly distributed over this range.The comparison protocol is based on the US National Committee for Clinical Laborator Standards(NCCLS) Evaluation Protocol EP9-A,“Method Comparison and Bias Estimation Using Patient Samples”.The CRMLN consists of three US laboratories and seven international laboratories.Osaka Medical Center for Health Science and Promotion has been one of the full members of the CRMLN since July 1992.The CRMLN laboratories use the CDC reference methods for TC and LDLC or designated comparison method for HDLC and are closely linked to CDC through participation in the bimonthly survey.
