“Journey to Nunavut:The Kreelak Story” is a short movie directed by Ole Gjerstad and Martin Kreelak in 1999.It tells us the story about a three generations Inuit family (which is probably the last Canada’s nomads),their early life as hunters until today,where young adults grow up in government-created settlements.I agree that Martin Kreelak has done a very good job by pointing out,in the movie,a very serious problem:assimilation.
First of all,the Canadian residential school system in 19th-20th century shows clearly an effort to assimilate aboriginal people into mainstream Canadian society.The system consisted of schools especially for aboriginal children set up by Anglican,Catholic and Presbyterian churches.A major problem of residential school is that some young boys and girls who attended residential school were physically or sexually abused.In 2008,the government made a statement to apologize to these people.In the movie,Martin Kreelak talks about his own experience in a residential school.He emphasizes that they are not allowed to speak Inuit language.They would experience severe punishments if they are caught speaking Inuit language with others.“I remember it.That hurts.” He said.After all,it’s not difficult to understand that Canadian residential school system is a tool of assimilation.
Secondly,assimilation is very present because aboriginal people are forced to join white people.Martin’s brother says that they have to join them:“No dog,no caribou.” In fact,whites work to bring civilization to the North and bring new technology with them.However,aboriginal people have a lot of difficulties to adapt to these new technologies and to find jobs.A good example from the documentary is that Morris confirmed that they had no choice but to work in whites’ mine factories and there are a lot of accidents in the warehouse.That’s why I disagree with assimilation.
Finally,I have to say that I disagree with assimilation because the loss of cultures has become an important problem for aboriginal people.Today,there are more than 1 172 790 aboriginal people in Canada,which represents 3.8% of Canada’s total population.As what we know,there are over thirty languages spoken by aboriginal people,but the conservation of the languages is in danger.Nowadays,a lot of young adults and teenagers speak English or French as their first language,and have lost their native language.Grandparents have difficulties to talk with their grandchildren.This is certainly what we do not want to see.
In conclusion,I must say that I’m totally disagree with assimilation,and it’s clearly shown in the text that the movie is about assimilation in three ways:Canadian residential school system,being forced to join whites’ world and a loss of culture.I think that the government has to realize that assimilation is not the right solution and it should really do something to help aboriginal people.
