We know that a family name is one's last name in Britain,while a given name is his first name or christian name .But do you know what a family name means?
A long time ago,many people's family names meant who they were,some people's last names may tell us their jobs.If a man was callled Taylor,he usually did a tailor's work.A man callled Garden would work as a gardener.
A last name may also show who a person's fa-ther was .For example ,Peterson meant"Peter's son",that is ,the son's father was Peter.Thomason meant the person was the son of Thomas .
But we mustn't think that every English person can explain where his or her family name comes from.
Now as tiem goes by,the meanings of many family mames have been lost.
