a long time ago , two brothers lived in a small village , the younger brother was li gang , and the elder brother was li ping .
every morning , the brothers crossed a bridge over a small river to go to work . one morning when li gang crossed the bridge , his ax fell into the river . he sat down and cried .
suddenly he saw an old man in front of him . the old man asked him why he was crying . li gang said ,"i dropped my ax into the water and now i cannot work ." then the old man went away .
soon he returned with a silver ax . li gang looked at it and said ," that is not my ax."then the old man brought another ax . it was made of gold , but li gang said it was not his ax.
finally the old man showed him an iron ax. li gang said ," that is the ax i lost ."the old man told him ," you are an honest boy .i will give you your ax and the gold ax ,too ."
when li gang got home , he told his brother about the old man and the axes . but his brother didn't believe it . so the next morning li ping went to the river and dropped his ax from the bridge . then he started to cry loudly .
the old man came . li ping told him that he had dropped his ax . li ping asked for help .
when the old man brought a silver ax to him ,li ping said that it was his . then the old man showed him a gold ax . he said that the gold ax was also his . but the old man was unhappy . he said ," you are not an honest boy . you cannot keep the silver ax or the gold ax . and i will not return you your iron ax ." then he went away .

很久以前,在一个小村庄里住着两兄弟,弟弟叫李刚,哥哥叫李平.
两兄弟每天早晨都要经过一座小桥到一条小河的对岸去做工.有一天,李刚过桥的时候失手把斧头掉到了河里.他坐在地上伤心的哭了起来.突然一位老者出现在他面前,问他为何哭得这么伤心.李刚答道：“我靠我的斧头做工,可是我却不小心把它掉到河里去了”.老者听完便离开了.不久,老者再次出现了,手中还拿着一把银斧头.李刚看了看老者手中的斧头,说道：“这不是我的斧头.”老者又拿来了另外一把金斧头.但是李刚说这也不是他的斧头.最后,老者拿出了一把铁斧头.李刚忙说：“这就是我掉落的斧头.”老者对李刚说：“你是一个诚实的孩子,我把银斧头和金斧头一起送给你.”
李刚回到家后将事情的经过告诉了哥哥李平,但是李平说什么也不相信.于是第二天,李平也到小桥上把斧头掉到河里,坐在旁边大声的哭.老者出现了,李平告诉他自己把斧头掉到了河里,请老者帮帮他.当老者拿出一把银斧头的时候,李平忙说这就是他掉的斧头.老者又拿出一把金斧头,他说金斧头也是他的.但老者生气的说道：“你不是个诚实的孩子,银斧头和金斧头我不会给你,你的铁斧头我也不会帮你找回来了”.说完老者就离开了.
